Belize Christian Ministry, Ltd.
Welcome to our new web site. Please bear with us as the site is created and updated.

HISTORY Belize Christian Ministry, Ltd. was founded by me, Reverend Pamella Picon, in 2002. It is a registered non-profit entity in Belize. Initially, the ministry was formed to facilitate my performing marriage ceremonies for my guests at Mopan River Resort. As resort guests learned more about the kids I have been sponsoring personally since 1997, many expressed an interest in helping local children, too. At this point, the ministry was expanded and began accepting donations from the guests to help other children in Benque Viejo. Though the resort is now under new ownership, I have established my ministry headquarters in the town of Benque and plan to continue and expand with educational support and, hopefully, other community projects.

There is no free public education in Belize. Due to increases in school fees, additional required book purchases, as well as local general inflation, the total cost for four years of high school here in Benque Viejo is currently BZ$4000.00 per student (US$2000).  While the high school previously provided most of the text books, they too, are falling victim to increased costs and lack of government support.

The BCM Annual Scholarship Competition began after one couple pledged to support one child all through high school, and has thus far been held in 2006 and 2007. Since then, additional individuals have pledged significant help for other students. Contributions in any amount are welcome, as our pooled resources are just as helpful! We currently host five local teens on full four-year scholarship through secondary school. These students were selected after entering an essay competition: two winners in the year 2006; and three in 2007. Scholarships include all school tuition and fees, uniforms, books and supplies, and any dues or trip fees that may arise. I plan to include some, if not all of the winning essays-- a real eye opener!  For further information, please see the Scholarship page.

Additionally, help with school costs are given to other individuals in times of need, as well as general support to the schools directly, and school-related activities within the community.

General info: Belize Christian Ministry, of which the Rev. Pamella Picon is director, is registered as a non-profit entity here in Belize. As such, we are authorized to solicit donations for charitable causes within our community. We have a bank account set up in the Ministry name, and can issue receipts for any such donations (though it is not likely that donations made here would be of any tax value in other countries). You would, however, have the satisfaction of knowing that you have contributed to worthy causes within the Benque Viejo community, through an organization that can administer such programs in an efficient and beneficial manner. You may rest assured that 100% of your donation would reach the community, as no funds are retained for “administrative” expenses.

Of primary concern in our local community, is helping kids have access to education. Most of our schools are managed by church groups, such as the Nazarenes, Catholics, and Seventh Day Adventists. These folks actually run very good schools, but there are significant costs involved in enrolling kids in these schools: including registration fees; all textbooks, workbooks, notebooks and art/craft supplies; as well as a backpack to put everything in... and uniforms and shoes! In a family with several children, and parents that are un- or under-educated themselves (and often unemployed), this amounts to an enormous financial burden. As a result, many children never start school, or have to drop out after a few years.

Our goal is to establish a fund that can be used to supplement the efforts of these parents who realize the importance of education for their children’s future. This fund may be used to purchase books, or craft supplies for class projects; and perhaps provide additional assistance to the school(s) directly, to help defray expenses that would otherwise be passed on to students.

It is also possible that Ministry funds would be donated to families that have been burdened with emergency medical expenses due to accidents, as this can also force parents to remove their children from school.

Thank you and God bless! Rev. Pam
